Hike 143: Mafadi Peak (Drakensberg)

  • Start & Finish Point: Injisuthi.

DAY 1: INJISUTHI CAMP (1,460 m) to CENTENARY HUT (2,311 m).

  • Distance: 11.9 km
  • Time: 7 hr 47 min
  • Elevation Gain: 971 m

There were three river crossings on this day.

DAY 2: CENTENARY HUT (2,311 m) to HIGH CAMP (3,034 m).

  • Distance: 11.2 km 
  • Time: 7 hr 42 min
  • Elevation Gain: 981 m 

We hiked up Judges Pass on this day. It’s quite steep. The only tough part in the entire hike.

DAY 3: HIGH CAMP (3,034 m) – MAFADI PEAK (3,450 m) – CENTENARY HUT (2,311 M).

  • Distance: 18 km
  • Time: 12 hr 8 min
  • Elevation Gain: 708 m

High Camp to Mafadi Peak took 2 hr 26 min. Polite pace. (3.5 km, 442 m elevation gain)

DAY 4: CENTENARY HUT (2,311 m) to INJISUTHI CAMP (1,460 m).

  • Distance: 11.9 km
  • Time: 4 hr 48 min

This was one of my most memorable hikes. I got to do this hike with mountaineering legends, Sibusiso Vilane and Saray Khumalo.
